How to Get Surf – Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire

Recommended Videos

Surf is one of the most important HMs you’ll come across on your adventure through the Hoenn region in Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. Not only is it a powerful move to use in battle, but you’ll need it to get to some of the locations later on in the game. Here’s exactly how you can.

First, you’ll need to beat the fifth Gym leader in Hoenn, Norman. You can find this Gym in Petalburg City and it’ll require you to take on some pretty powerful Normal-type Pokemon. He’s got a level 28 Slaking, a level 28 Vigoroth, and another Slaking at level 30.

Once you’ve defeated these, you’ll be awarded TM67 (Retaliate), and the Balance Badge which allows you to use Surf outside of battle. Now, all you need to do is head to the exit of the Gym and go left. In the house to the left of the Gym, you’ll find Wally’s father, who will then give you Surf.

Remember, HMs cannot be unlearned once they’ve been taught so you’ll want to make sure that you give it to a Pokémon you’re going to be happy having Surf as one of its four moves.

That’s all there is to getting Surf in Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. Now float on!
