Yakuza 6 may be the end of series protagonist Kazuma Kiryu’s story, but it won’t be the end of the series. Toshihiro Nagoshi, the series’ general director, confirmed that a new game is in the works at the Famitsu Awards 2016. Thanks to Games Talk for spotting the announcement, and Gematsu for translating.
During a Famitsu interview with Nagoshi, following Yakuza 6: The Song of Life winning an award, the director gave a few details on the next project. He wanted to emphasize that Yakuza 6 is indeed labelled as the end of Kazuma Kiryu’s story, and the studio doesn’t have any plans to go against that. The key term Nagoshi wanted to create was a “New Yakuza,” specifying that this doesn’t necessarily have to be restricted to one title, but could span multiple ones.
The next title is already in production and will use the Dragon Engine created for Yakuza 6, however, the engine still isn’t complete. Nagoshi thinks the engine will really be complete by around the second or third game. He hopes that there’s an opportunity to talk about the new project in the near future.
Yakuza 6: The Song of Life launched last December in Japan, but is currently scheduled for a 2018 release in North America and Europe.  You can check out our preview of the title from last year’s Tokyo Game Show right here.  A remake of the original game, titled Yakuza Kiwami, is set to release on PS4 on August 29 in North America.
