Cross-play between PC and console gamers certainly seems like a real possibility in PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds based on comments made by executive producer of PUBG, Chang Han Kim, to VG 24/7 in a recent interview with the publication. Kim expressed great enthusiasm and interest in cross-play, but recognizes there are some hurdles to clear first.
“Cross network play between the PC and the console is definitely something we want to do down the road, and we don’t anticipate we’ll have any technical issues with that, But… when you consider the competitive side of the game, I do feel that there’s a balance issue between controllers and keyboard and mouse. That’s what’s making it difficult for us to do right away.” said Kim to VG 24/7.
Like many other developers that have mulled the idea of cross-play between platforms, the issue of competitive balance is holding up the team. However “definitely something we want to do down the road” certainly feels like developer Bluehole Studio is taking it more seriously than others that have just kicked the idea around while never actually getting to it.
When PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds first reaches Xbox One later this year, there will likely be no shortage of interested players as the game is a mega-hit on Steam and Twitch. However, if Bluehole Studio can find a way to link the two eco-systems together so veterans on PC and their console friends can play together, that would be icing on the cake.
