Hello Games founder Sean Murray has formally announced the launch of No Man’s Sky update 1.3 dubbed “Atlas Rises.” This announcement comes after 250,000 gamers spent months trying to solve the alternate reality game (ARG) for No Man’s Sky, and we’ll find out this week if it was worth the wait and effort.

In a press release, Murray said Atlas Rises “focuses on improving the central story of No Man’s Sky and adds the ability to quick travel between locations using portals.” Yesterday, Hello Games teased a new screenshot featuring a Portal with a dialing terminal, which is presumably used to choose a certain destination. Portals were shown in a trailer months before the full game launch, but it was inactive in-game. We’ll hear how Portals will be implemented once the Atlas Rises patch notes is released shortly before the update goes live.

Hello Games started its ARG by distributing cassettes, which contained clues about Portals. Numerous cryptic websites, PDFs, and videos surfaced online for interested gamers to decrypt. All puzzles were solved by the gaming community just this week, and Murray gave a message in celebration of their success.

“When we posted those cassettes we didn’t know what to expect. In the last eight weeks a quarter of a million players from across the globe (174 countries, to be precise!) have come together – united by a shared love of mystery and science fiction – to form the Citizen Science Division. You’ve travelled great distances both real and virtual, undertaken complex tasks, and explored the depths of simulation theory. New friendships have been forged, and a tight-knit community has been created. Most importantly a cute hamster has a new home. You’ve become part of the No Man’s Sky origin story.”

Aside from everything mentioned above and a speculated addition of a fourth race, not much is known about what’s to come in No Man’s Sky update 1.3.
