Many fans have been curious about the existence or possibility of a sequel to Supermassive Games’ 2015 PlayStation exclusive Until Dawn, and in a recent conversation with Game Informer, Supermassive Games answered at least some of those questions.
Game Informer visited London for a look at Supermassive Games upcoming title Man of Medan, part of an anthology series titled The Dark Pictures, which will consist of five parts.
During this visit, Supermassive Games revealed that rather than work on a sequel to Until Dawn, the developers are instead focusing on this new and different area of horror in Man of Medan.
Pete Samuels, Supermassive Games CEO and executive producer reassures fans he understands their want for Until Dawn 2, but explains that: “A lot of [creating the anthology] is about our desire to serve that fanbase from our perspective and to serve us ourselves in what we love to do, which is do more stories and characters, and do it more frequently than one or two every few years.”
They explain that they are more interested in providing more frequent experiences for fans which offer different stories and characters.
There are also practical limitations when creating a direct sequel to Until Dawn, as mentioned by producer Dan Mcdonald. Different characters in Until Dawn survive based on player choices, so the sequel would have to take into account all different character possibilities and possibly work from an Until Dawn save-file in order to carry this progress over:
“If we were making sequels, we don’t know who survived. I mean we could probably work it out from your game save, but we don’t want to make a sequel to that. We want to make a different story with different people.”
The director of Man of Medan Tom Heaton says that this new project allows the team to explore different areas of the horror genre – a process they seem excited about: “On an anthology, it’s a great opportunity to wrestle with a new subject, a new genre, and with characters that you can develop specifically for that story. You’re not tied to historical characters that you have to use.”
Until Dawn previously received a spin-off, Rush of Blood, and a prequel, The Inpatient, but for now the team is focusing their efforts elsewhere with a fresh new idea set to release this Summer on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
