According to a press release, NHL 18 features a new 3-on-3 game mode called NHL Threes. This “arcade-inspired experience with fast-paced, over-the-top action” offers local co-op and online play, and a circuit-style campaign mode with “objective-based rewards.” EA Sports Hockey League mode will also have a 3-on-3 option.

Additionally, the new Creative Attack controls allow one-handed dekes and back-handed toe-drags, while the Defensive Skill Stick can counter with poke check targeting and controlled stick sweeps. Other details include franchise mode receiving a new expansion draft option, solo challenges coming to Hockey Ultimate Team, and a new Hockey Training Camp mode.

A multiplayer beta consisting of NHL Threes, EA Sports Hockey League, and Online Versus modes begins July 25. Those interested in the beta can sign up now at the EA Sports website.

NHL 18 launches Sept. 15 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4, though pre-ordering the Young Stars or Young Stars Deluxe editions includes three days early access on Sept. 12. A 10-hour trial of the game will be available for EA Access subscribers on Xbox One starting Sept. 7.
