Friday the 13th The Game, PS Plus

It’s spooky season, so no wonder the PS Plus headline freebie on PS4 this month is Friday the 13th. If you’ve not played it before, don’t let talk of falling player counts and so so review scores fool you into thinking this isn’t worth playing. Friday the 13th is awesome fun; it’s one the best multiplayer experiences we’ve had in years. Sure, there were server issues and bugs aplenty, but it’s a real blast to experience with buddies. There’s a palpable tension when you’re in the midst of a great game, and playing Jason is great fun, too.

Elsewhere, there’s another multiplayer experience to try. Laser League might not look much at first glance, but this an innovative title that offers a different sort of multiplayer gameplay. That old adage, “easy to play, hard to master” has never felt more appropriate. Laser League is super simple to pick up, but there’s actually a ton of depth that gives it genuine esports caliber. It just needs more players, so now is your chance.

It’s another cracking month for PS4 owners who can take advantage of the cross buy function for PS Vita and PS3 titles. The Bridge, Rocketbirds 2, and 2064 Read Only Memories are three titles that can be played across their original system or PS4. The latter, in particular, is certainly worth trying. 2064 Read Only Memories earned critical acclaim for its unique story-telling and unique cyberpunk aesthetic.

There’s even titles for VR and Playlink players this month, with Here They Lie adding another horror experience for those wanting to scare themselves this Halloween. Knowledge is Power is a fun little trivia game available on Playlink.

Bonus content for H1Z1 arrives for PS Plus owners in the form of the Blueshift Pack, too, which adds the Blue AR-15 schematic, Pro Gamer Hoodie, and Marine Blue Offroader.

Xbox Games with Gold has its own brilliant multiplayer freebie for players to jump into in the form of Overcooked (Oct. 1). Trust us when we say this one is an absolute gem. As a couch co-op experience, it’s everything you could ever want. You’ll find yourself oscillating between tears of laughter and beads of sweat as you try and coordinate the world’s most dangerous kitchens in an attempt to serve hungry customers.

A polar opposite, Victor Vran (Oct. 16) is a solid single-player action-RPG that oozes eerie ambiance. It’s a wonderfully atmospheric dungeon crawler that offers plenty of depth in its systems and entertainment in combat. Players will have to overcome all sorts of wicked demons and monsters with all manner of different weapons. Certainly, one for Halloween.

Stuntman Ignition (Oct. 1) and Hitman: Blood Money (Oct. 16) are your Xbox 360 games, but they’re available on Xbox One thanks to backward compatibility. Good thing, too, because Hitman: Blood Money really does deserve to be played by as many people as possible. It’s still arguably the series’ high point, and you’ll find that it holds up exceptionally well, even next to the new Hitman games. This is the perfect tonic for those eagerly waiting for Hitman 2’s release later this year.

Who Wins?

 PS Plus

This month really is a close call between the two services. On the one hand, PS Plus is offering a really nice spread of games that cover multiplayer and single-player experiences. There’s content across its entire stable of hardware, including VR and Playlink. There’s even bonus content for H1Z1 players! We’re also stoked to see Halloween-themed games across both PS4 and VR.

But if we’re being honest, Xbox Games with Gold is offering two games that totally outclass anything over on PS Plus. Overcooked and Hitman: Blood Money are critically acclaimed titles that everyone should play. There’s more gameplay in those two games than everything over on PS Plus put together. For that reason, as much as we’re appreciative of the quantity of content over on PS Plus, it’s the quality of Xbox Games with Gold this month that wins out in the end.

Regardless of which service you’re using, though, you can’t go wrong in October with either. As always, make sure you add all your games to library at the very least, even if you aren’t going to play them straight away. That way, they’re always available for you.

If you’re curious as to what’s on offer next month, PlayStation has a surprise for you –the game line-up has leaked early.
