The Last Guardian was first announced for the PlayStation 3 way back in 2009 and has been through development hell since then. Just as we thought the game was going to be cancelled, Sony re-announced the game for the PlayStation 4 at last year’s E3.
It would be fair to say that many games that keep players waiting for so tend to run the risk of gamers losing interest in the title. After seven years, it was possible The Last Guardian might encounter this problem but it seems the game is more popular than ever judging by pre-order numbers.
In an interview with MCV, Sony’s product manager Joe Palmer stated that the publisher had “seen a really positive response to the Collector’s Edition in particular,” which proves there’s a “huge appetite for the game”.
Palmer explained that Sony has approached marketing for the game with a subtle approach. “When you’re working on a game that has such incredibly high levels of expectation, it’s impossible not to consider the pressure of meeting player expectations,” said Palmer. “We’ve tried to avoid fueling the hype by playing on the fact that people have been waiting a long time for this. We want people to be excited because the game looks incredible, not because of its complicated development story.”
It remains to be seen whether The Last guardian will be worth the wait, but it certainly seems that fans are still interested in the title. The game is set to be released next week on Dec. 9.
