Overwatch’s Symmetra Is Switching Roles After Her Rework

This article is over 6 years old and may contain outdated information

Following the recent tweaks yesterday on the Public Test Servers, Blizzard is also planning some major changes for Overwatch hero Symmetra. She’s been due for a rework, and while we still don’t know much about what they have planned, she’ll be losing her title as a Support character in the near future. During an interview with InvenGlobal, Lead Software Engineer Tim Ford has revealed that the Symmetra rework will move her to the Defense role.

“We are discussing the change right now, and although we can’t tell you the details of each change, we would still like to let you know it will be a fairly dramatic change,” he explained, “One thing we can tell you is that Symmetra will turn from a support hero to a defense hero after the remake. Our aim is to make the usage of Symmetra even more flexible from it.

This shouldn’t be much of a surprise as plenty of fans have been questioning her role as a Support hero. Before her Photon Barrier skill, she had an ability that would grant each ally permanent shields. The ability granted the target a whopping 75 shields, and along with her teleporter, she was actually a pretty decent Support hero who didn’t have to rely on healing to keep her team alive.

Unfortunately, Blizzard nerfed the shield ability to the point where they just scrapped it altogether for her Shield Generator. The Photon Barrier, on the other hand, was more of a defensive skill that didn’t actually provide any traditional support, leaning the hero towards a more Tank/Defense role. Couple this with the fact that all the Overwatch Support heroes have at least one healing ability except her.

For now, fans will have to keep waiting on what Blizzard has plans for the hero. We’ll keep you updated about the Overwatch Symmetra rework as more details surface.
