Sean Murray: No Man’s Sky “Maybe Isn’t the Game You Imagined from Those Trailers”

Hmmm....

No Man’s Sky is right around the corner, with the game set to officially release first in North America tomorrow, but Sean Murray – Hello Games’ founder and the co-creator of No Man’s Sky – has suggested today that this hotly anticipated title may be launching to distorted expectations.

Writing in a blog post entitled “What do you do in No Man’s Sky?” on the game’s official site, Murray gave a specific breakdown of what the game “definitely is,” for those who were still confused:

  • Exploring a universe of pretty procedurally generated worlds, with beautiful creatures
  • Trading with NPCs
  • Combat against robots/mechs and cool space battles
  • Survival/crafting in a universe sized sandbox
  • An awesome procedural soundtrack from my genuine favourite band
  • For one small moment, you might feel like you’ve stepped into a sci-fi book cover

He then added that “if you hoped for things like pvp multiplayer or city building, piloting freighters, or building civilisations… that isn’t what NMS is,” though he did suggest that future updates, such as an enormous patch which went live for the game today, may look into developing such features over time.

Murray concluded by admitting that he expects No Man’s Sky to be “super divisive” and “not for everyone,” but he can’t wait to see what the community and fans think of the game.
