How to Get a Mount and Override Machines – Horizon Zero Dawn

Recommended Videos

Walking and running around as Aloy in Horizon Zero Dawn may seem fine when you first start out on your adventure, but you’ll soon find that the world is far too large to use these methods of transport the entire time. Therefore, Aloy looks towards those lovely little machines. Here’s how to get a mount and override machines.

Toward the start of the game, Aloy will acquire the ability to control and override the machines with her spear. In order to actually do this in the game, you’ll need to get close up behind a machine. If you’re detected, you won’t have the option, so you’ll need to go the stealthy route for this. Your best bet is to get into some long grass and use the whistle ability to lure one machine close. Once it turns back around, hold down Triangle to override the machine and bring it onto your side. Once the bar has filled, the machine will turn blue, signaling that this machine is now your mount. Simply press Triangle next to it when the prompt appears and Aloy will automatically mount the back of the machine.

The first machine you’ll do this to is a Strider. You can mount the Strider and use it to get around the world more quickly. As you progress through Horizon Zero Dawn, you’ll be able to override more machines to make your mount or use to your advantage in other ways. For example, the small Watcher cannot carry you on its back, but it will support you in combat if you manage to override it.

That’s all there is to getting a mount and overriding machines in Horizon Zero Dawn. For more tips, tricks, and guides for the game, be sure to check out our ever-expanding wiki guide.
