How to Beat Stormbirds Easily – Horizon Zero Dawn
Stormbirds are some of the strongest machines in Horizon Zero Dawn that you’ll come across. These highly maneuverable flying machines love to bombard you with Shock and melee attacks from up high, often getting into your blind spot. As such, targeting and taking them down can be tricky business, but here are a few tips to help you beat Stormbirds easily.
Stormbirds have two main attacks that they’ll flit between. The first is its Lightning Gun that is mounted to its front. This is used in a variety of ways, from charging a homing shot, to dropping Shock bombs on your position from above. The other main attack is its dive melee, which will often see Stormbirds rushing down on you undetected from a great height. Both of these attacks can make light work of your health bar, so you’ll want to focus on disabling at least one of these to start with.
The engines of Stormbirds are attached to their wings, with three on each. Pinpointing these can be pretty difficult as Stormbirds rarely keep their wings still for long, but if you can land a Tearbolt arrow or two on these, this will disable the dive attack and deal significant damage in the process.
Alternatively, you can use Tearbolt or Precision arrows to deal with the Lightning Gun first. This is a much larger target and can easily be taken care of when Stormbirds are hovering and looking down at you. Simply wait until it’s just hovering in the air and prepare your arrows. Press R3 to activate Concentration to line up your shots better, and unload as many as you can at the Lightning Gun.
Another method is to use your Ropecaster to tie Songbirds down. They won’t stay down for too long, but it should be enough to help you easily target their weak points or land a critical hit if the opportunity arises.
Resist Shock Potions are a good idea for this battle too, as this will limit the damage that Stormbirds can deal out with their Lightning Guns. After focusing your fire on their weak points, Stormbirds will eventually fall. They do have a large health pool, though, so be prepared for the long haul.
