Fortnite’s Controversial Battle Royale Mode Launches Today

Co-op sandbox survival game Fortnite has had its latest patch released today, introducing the title’s controversial Battle Royale mode to users of the free-to-play game alongside squads, duos, supply drops, and an array of new weapons. Fixes for the game’s Saving the World campaign in PVE have also been added.

Fortnite’s Battle Royale mode pits you against a hundred other players in an attempt to be the last hero standing, challenging you to build as much as you can from supply drops in order to survive as best you can. Keep in mind that others can race you to supply drops as well, meaning combat skill will also come in handy.

Other notable inclusions in the patch include numerous gameplay improvements, increased ammo stock, a minimap that allows users to find the closest path to safety should they be caught in a storm, HUD updates that accommodate squads, inventory improvements, and fixes to well-known game crashes and bugs.

Fortnite’s new mode has been subject of a hot debate recently with developer of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, Bluehole. Though the latter studio respects Epic Games for Unreal Engine 4 (the engine in which Battlegrounds is made), the studio feels like Fortnite could be ripping off PUBG with Battle Royale, and as such could be causing damage to the brand. The biggest difference between the two titles is that Fortnite relies more heavily on co-op mechanics, though that may not be substantial according to Bluehole.

Fortnite is out now for PC, Mac, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
