Square Enix is no stranger to developing direct sequels for the Final Fantasy franchise. Final Fantasy X was so beloved that X-2 was made, and the Final Fantasy XIII universe received not one, but two direct sequels. With Final Fantasy XV, Square Enix is solely focused on expanding the already-developed universe with extra story episodes and the upcoming multiplayer mode – comrades.
In an interview with Polygon, Final Fantasy director, Hajime Tabata, states that, “If you do that full sequel model of expanding on an IP or a series, it’s good in certain ways, the negative of that is there’s a very large open period where you’re not releasing anything. In that period, you get people to move away, and their attachment to the franchise dissipates a little bit.”
Instead of working on a full-fledged sequel to XV, Tabata prefers releasing smaller packages every few months to keep people playing the game. Just this year, Square Enix has released two story-focused episodes where you play as Gladiolus and Prompto, with Episode Ignis coming later this year. Expanding on the world of Final Fantasy is their main concern, of which we’ve seen with Kingsglaive, occasional updates for the game, and the upcoming Comrades multiplayer mode. Tabata explains further “If we had tried to do that as a traditional, full-scale sequel, that would have been very difficult, but it works really well in [keeping] that continued relationship with fans.”
