Epic Games Has Acquired Rock Band Developer Harmonix

Developer Harmonix is the latest studio to join Epic Games’ growing publishing wing. Announced today, the studio is set to begin bringing its “unique brand of musical gaming experiences to the Metaverse.” That’s Fortnite’s Metaverse, we presume, not Zukerburg’s bizarre plans to suck us into a digital world to farm our data.

A statement over on the studio’s website reads in part:

“Over the last 26 years, we have pushed ourselves to redefine how people experience and interact with music. From the earliest days of The Axe to Guitar Hero, Rock Band, Dance Central, our VR titles, FUSER, and everything in between, we have aspired to redefine what a music game can be. Now, we’ll be working with Epic to once again challenge expectations as we bring our unique brand of musical gaming experiences to the Metaverse, and we couldn’t be more excited.”

Fans of Rockband are likely keen to understand how the studio’s plans affect the production of new DLC and peripherals for Harmonix’s games, and so the studio has compiled a brief FAQ to answer those concerns.

Put simply, support for all its games, including DLC for Rock Band and future FUSER events, will continue as normal, while all their games will remain available for purchase on the same clients they are now. You will still be able to buy Harmonix games on Steam.

The team isn’t quite ready to share any details about its future content, but apparently, we’ll find out more soon.
