Final Fantasy XV may not be out yet, but after over 10 years of development, the question does arise: are the developers planning on a sequel for the game? Possibly even a trilogy, like Final Fantasy XIII?
Director Hajime Tabata hinted at an answer to that in an interview with Gamespot, in which he said, “To answer the question of whether we have any intention of making further games with Noctis in them after or continuing the story after Final Fantasy XV is out, I can tell you we don’t currently have any plans for that.”
Tabata did not rule out the possibility of Square Enix executives calling for more games in the Final Fantasy XV universe, however. “There may be a call for it business-wise,” he said, “but personally from our point of view, the way we see it is there are people that have been waiting for this game for a very long time now, and we want them to keep enjoying it for as long as possible.” This might be an allusion to the plentiful DLC that the game will receive after it releases in November.
Considering the legendarily long development cycle Final Fantasy XV has been through, it would make business sense to reuse assets and ship out another story featuring Noctis and the gang. Final Fantasy certainly has a precedent with this: Final Fantasy X received the direct sequel Final Fantasy X-2, while Final Fantasy XIII received two direct sequels, Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII.
Even apart from these, the Final Fantasy series has been known for its many spin-offs, which we’ve got all ordered up and ranked.
