Each zombie mode has remained mechanically similar since its introduction in 2008’s Call of Duty: World at War. For the first time in the series, Call of Duty: WWII’s zombie mode will feature character classes as well as other huge additions to freshen up the zombie killing experience.
Similar to Tripwire Interactive’s Killing Floor, Call of Duty: WWII’s Nazi Zombies features character classes that affect one’s playstyle. Shared by Game Informer (via Reddit), the zombie mode has four main classes: offense, control, support, and medic. Classes will have customizable loadouts with “permanent progression elements,” which is largely helpful for casual gamers who get stuck in a particular difficult zombie wave.
Player controlled characters aren’t the only ones that are unique. There are multiple zombie types, and the lower tier undead include zombies without limbs, zombies without arms, and bomber zombies. All these zombies were assembled by a mad scientist named Dr. Straub, and the most terrifying of his creations include zombies “assembled from massive weapons, flame, and multiple bodies.” Sledgehammer Games also confirmed that mini bosses will make a return in the zombie game mode.
Unlike previous zombie modes where player are simply required to kill all enemies in an area, the game now features unique objectives and location-based encounters. “For instance, in one situation players must kill zombies within a constantly moving radius to generate an electrical charge to unlock a new area,” lead zombies concept artist Lawrence Mai told Game Informer. Additionally, completing objectives is required to unlock new areas.
Despite all these additions and changes, some notable features from the series remain, such as collecting money for purchasing weapons and boarding up windows.
Call of Duty: WWII launches November 3 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. The game is available in various editions with exclusive pre-order bonuses.
