Activision announced today that the Call of Duty franchise will return this fall through Black Ops 4. Developer Treyarch will be sharing more details about the game on May 17, though for now we know it’s currently slated for release on October 12 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
What’s perhaps most interesting about today’s announcement is that the annual title is due out a month earlier than usual, perhaps due to pressure from Red Dead Redemption 2 or in an effort to undermine Rockstar’s wild west epic.
As for the game itself, Activation promises that it will “revolutionize” the Black Ops series and represent a “game-changing experience.” It’s anyone’s guess as to what new elements developer Treyarch will bring to the table this time around, though it will be interesting to see how drastically the studio decides to change the franchise’s super popular multiplayer component.
Only time will tell for certain. Until then, we can all speculate whether or not the game is indeed due out for the Switch too, at least until Nintendo hits us with that Direct later today. Let’s also keep our fingers crossed that the industry doesn’t adopt IIII as the standard way to write the number four from here on out.
