Destiny 2’s first expansion, Curse of Osiris, launched last week to complaints from the game’s community that the DLC had locked out non-season pass players from some activities, such as the weekly Prestige Nightfall strike and the Iron Banner competitive mode, due to the update increasing the required Power level necessary to play.
In a blog post today, Bungie admitted the developer “made some mistakes” and explained the reasoning behind the lockout. Essentially, the normal versions of the Leviathan Raid and Nightfall would be accessible to all players, while the Prestige versions would require the latest expansion since the difficulty would be raised to latest Power cap. The limited-time multiplayer playlists – Trials of The Nine and Iron Banner – would use new maps with new rewards each season and, therefore, require the latest expansion.
“The Prestige Raid was a novel experience that players value, even if they don’t own Curse of Osiris, and it was a mistake to move that experience out of reach,” Bungie said. “Throughout the lifetime of the Destiny Franchise, Trials has always required that players owned the latest Expansion. However, for Destiny 2, Trials of The Nine launched as part of the main game, so it’s not right for us to remove access to it.”
Bungie plans to rework the Power level requirement for some activities in the Dec. 12 update, alongside introducing the Masterworks system and changes to vendors. The Prestige Leviathan Raid will revert from 330 to 300 Power level, while the Prestige Nightfall will stay at 330 and require the Curse of Osiris expansion. The “The Prestige” Achievement/Trophy will be updated to only reference the raid to reflect the change and allow those without the DLC to achieve it.
The normal Nightfall will be available to all players every week unless it features a Curse of Osiris map. Bungie said it is investigating a third difficulty option for “a challenge that stays relevant with each new Expansion, and a Prestige version that is available to all players.”
The limited-time multiplayer playlists – Iron Banner, Faction Rally, and The Dawning – will be available for all Destiny 2 players, though Trials of The Nine will require Curse of Osiris when the mode features a DLC map or to receive the new Seasonal Armor Ornaments rewards. The week-long Faction Rally planned for Dec. 12 has also been postponed.
Bungie teased changes to the Heroic Strikes playlist introduced with the latest expansion, such as “new challenges, new Modifiers, and free access for all players,” for a future update.
The Destiny 2 update will go live for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC versions tomorrow during the scheduled maintenance. The servers will be down during that time, and is expected to last from 10 a.m. ET to 5 p.m. ET.
