Biomutant, the upcoming “kung-fu RPG” by THQ Nordic, has a new trailer that focuses on the game’s varied environments and cutesy characters.

Channelling the aesthetic of titles such as Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, Biomutant’s world looks to contrast steampunk technology with classical fantasy tropes. A highlight of the trailer was the incorporation of vehicles, including a patchwork hot air balloon and a colorful mech.

Traversal within Biomutant’s overworld has not been discussed previously, but developer Experiment 101 took the opportunity to explain the game’s travel options in-depth. Players can choose from a wide array of options, including area-specific mounts, mechs, and even jet-skis.

While the project is still embedded in the RPG genre, this new trailer is further evidence of the game’s action credentials. Gameplay looks fluid and weighty, with its martial arts inspired combat looking better and better with time. Shooting is part of the combat, too, with the title featuring an array of weapons and modifications.

In terms of RPG systems, Biomutant expands on its mutation theme by incorporting it into its upgrade paths. The upgrades, known as Wushu forms, allow players to change fighting styles on-the-fly. The protagonist can also change his genetic code by exposing himself to radiation in the open world, opening up branching paths of customisation through attributes.

Story-wise, Biomutant tasks players with bringing an end to a plague that threatens New World, the game’s post-apocalyptic setting. The world’s fate is up in the air, with player choice having a major impact on the story’s ending.

Biomutant is due sometime soon for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
