Among the reasons that explain why Team Fortress 2 remains a very popular game, there are two which are essential: great casual gameplay and really unique and funny aesthetics. Concerning the latter, there’s a whole caricaturesque feeling created by the game’s own characters and the myriad of items that can be downloaded. unlocked or bought. The best part of this is that the amount and variety of the items are as limitless as the imagination of modders, thanks to Steam’s Workshop.
The truly amazing richness of Team Fortress 2 additions goes way beyond weapon skins. There are tons of ridiculous hats, cosmetic items, different weapons (which also have bonus effects) and, the most absurd of them all, taunts. These special animations used to mock enemy players (or just to show off) are simply amazing, and take the whole “funny game” thing to a completely new level.
Now, Valve knows these are Team Fortress 2’s main strengths and, accordingly, has now added taunts to Steam Workshop. This is not only a chance to expand the amount of customization options players have, but also a way of giving modders a new way of making money out of this free-to-play game. If you have what it takes to make a taunt, you can submit it to community voting. As happens with other mods, if you taunt makes it to the Steam Market you will actually get money from each sale. It’s a win-win situation.
Honestly, Team Fortress 2 is a very curious case. It’s been around since 2007, and yet it keeps getting better. Valve really knows how to make the most out of everything: in addition to delivering updates from time to time, turning to Team Fortress 2’ own community to help keep the game alive seems to be the perfect move. There’s still a lot to enjoy in TF2 and it’s certainly getting better.
