Bethesda has revealed new gameplay footage of Fallout 4 VR, showing the many changes it has made in reimagining the entire experience for virtual reality, including the slow motion bullet time-esque Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System (V.A.T.S.).
As detailed by lead producer Andrew Scharf in a video, the way V.A.T.S. functioned in Fallout 4 can be disorienting in VR as it would pull the camera away from players for a more dramatic angle. To alleviate this problem, Bethesda has redesigned V.A.T.S. to make players feel in control at all times. “What we do instead is we slow down time and the player can teleport around or look around in real time,” said Scharf. “I keep saying it’s like you’re Quicksilver from X-Men.”
Additionally, V.A.T.S. in Fallout 4 VR now requires you to point at an enemy’s specific body part instead of scrolling through menus. In a way, this new system forces you to be on your toes at all times.
As if donning a power armor didn’t make you feel like a force to be reckoned with, Bethesda is also implementing a few changes on this front. To better accommodate virtual reality, Scharf said the team has scaled the player’s view higher whenever they’re in suit to make them feel more powerful.” Another change in Fallout 4 VR when wearing the power armor includes a more realistic placement for HUDS.
Fallout 4 VR will contain the entire core gameplay experience of the original, but reimagined to better suit virtual reality. Gamers don’t have to wait too long as Fallout 4 VR launches for the HTC Vive on December 12. Those who can’t get enough of Bethesda’s games also have Skyrim VR and DOOM FVR to look forward to, releasing on November 17 for PSVR and December 1 for the PSVR and HTC Vive, respectively.
