Uncharted 4’s online multiplayer will feature microtransactions from the outset says the game’s lead multiplayer designer Robert Cogburn.
Players will be able to use real cash to purchase new weapons, items, tools, and upgrades, but Naughty Dog is eager to stress that all items can be obtained by playing the game.
The news was first revealed at the Paris Games Week when Cogburn was asked if Uncharted 4 would feature microtransactions. Cogburn said:
“Microtransactions will be available at launch, but we’ll have no gameplay items that will be gated through microtransactions.”
Uncharted 4’s multiplayer will allow players to use mystical totems to access supernatural powers and summon sidekicks that can help them out. Cogburn explained that getting the right balance between grinding for items and paying for them is a balance that will be determined by Naughty Dog after the multiplayer beta ends.
Even if everything can be unlocked in-game, this news will no doubt annoy many gamers who feel that microtransactions have no place in full price games.
Cogburn also revealed that Uncharted 4’s multiplayer will run at 900p and at 60fps. However, the main campaign will run at 1080p and at 30fps. Cogburn also confirmed that this is the last Uncharted game in the works but hinted that it may not be the last Uncharted game ever.
“We as a studio feel that this will probably be the last Uncharted game we do. Who knows?” He said.
Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is due to be released exclusively on the PlayStation 4 on March 18.
