Derek Yu, creator and developer of Spelunky, took to Twitter today to inform fans that Spelunky 2 will be delayed until next year.
Yu explains that due to the density and detail of the sequel, making the target date of releasing this year may not come to fruition, however, he also mentions that the game is not too far off their initial target either.
Yu assured fans in his Twitter thread that the team is hard at work despite being somewhat silent as of late, including that they are improving the detail in the environments shown off in their most recent gameplay trailer. He thanked fans for their patience as they work to bring fans a game that will be a worthy sequel.
Spelunky 2 surprised unexpecting fans when it was originally announced at Paris Games Week back in late 2017. It wasn’t until August of 2018 that Mossmouth games, developers of Spelunky 2, gave the game a release date targeted for some time in 2019 on PlayStation 4 and PC.
Today marks the game’s first real delay despite it being in development for quite some time.
What was once an open-source freeware game on Windows, Spelunkly has transformed into one of the best indie games of all time, finding a home on multiple consoles throughout the years, including the PS Vita.
Spelunky is a roguelike cave delving platforming game that puts the player in desperate situations with limited resources and randomly generated levels to make each playthrough more unique than the last. It is one of the hardest games to master, and yet, one of the hardest games to put down.
Spelunky 2 looks to add on to its predecessor’s features by adding more weapons, items, levels and even more intense spelunking action that the original game was known for.
In the gameplay trailer below, Mossmouth games show off co-op play, online play, improved graphics, various new characters and more.
Although we do not have a release date for Spelunky 2, now that we know it has been delayed, we can expect Derek Yu and his Mossmouth Games crew to work tirelessly to bring us a game that not only matches its previous game, but hopefully surpasses it as well.
For those who have a hankering for some Spelunking in the meantime, be sure to check it out on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
