Report: PS4 Is Best-Selling Console of 2018 in UK, But Switch Increases its Market Share

The UK Market is one of the most relevant in Europe and looks like the hardware race has been won by the PS4, according to a report by GamesIndustry, partly based on GFK and UKIE data.

According to the business-focused outlet, PS4 sold over a million units (within a total of consoles sold just under 2.5 million) and actually increased sales year-over-year. The biggest growth was for the Nintendo Switch, though, which sold over 20% more compared to the previous year.

Looking at software sales, 42.2% of total units moved (at retail. Digital isn’t included) were for PS4, 30.5% were for Xbox One, and 24% were for Switch. While the Switch’s market share was the smallest in absolute numbers, it increased  90.1% year-on-year, while PS4 games decreased  9.7%, and Xbox One games dropped by 12.7%

The top-three among the best selling games of the year were FIFA 19, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4.

It’ll be certainly interesting to see how shipments for PS4 and Nintendo Switch fared worldwide in the current quarter. Yet, we’ll have to wait for the beginning of February, when the two manufacturers will share their own stats. Microsoft doesn’t share shipments numbers, so we’ll probably remain in the dark there.
