Praey for the Gods is Finally Launching in Early Access; Stunning Trailer Showcases Gameplay

Praey for the Gods is finally releasing in Early Access after a lengthy development cycle. The Shadow of the Colossus-like survival adventure game has been in the works for four years since its successful crowdfunding campaign, but a Jan. 31 Early Access launch is now locked in.

The three-man team first started work on Prey for the Gods back in 2014 as a part-time project. Two years later and after raising $500,000 on Kickstarter, the team moved to Seattle to work on the project full-time. Fast forward another two years and the games’ name has since been changed to avoid legal strife with Bethesda’s Prey.

Development hasn’t been moving all that quickly, which isn’t all that surprising considering the size of the team. The upcoming Early Access period missed its December launch last year. But things appear to back on track, and the latest trailer reminds us all why Praey for the Gods is such an exciting trailer.

No Matter Studios describes its upcoming game:

“In Praey for the Gods, you play a lone hero sent to the edge of a dying world to discover the mystery behind a never-ending winter. Arriving with only the clothes on your back, you must survive the colossal dangers that you encounter.

To restore balance and reclaim the land from the brink, you will be faced with questions that not even a God knows the answer to.”

Key gameplay mechanics include scaling colossal enemies of epic-scale, similar to Fumita Ueda’s iconic game. The non-linear game design features crafting and survival mechanics, as well as plenty of puzzle-solving.

At present, the game is releasing as the complete package that was promised to backers during the initial campaign.

“The 5 bosses are done and fully playable, along with cutscenes, open world exploration, minions, puzzles, and all the additional Kickstarter Backer Content. It’s a fully playable game that is exactly what you backed us for when we started on this journey.”

That said, the developers have also admitted an interest in wanting to continue fleshing out the experience with further stretch targets. The content would then be added to the PC version for full release, as well as launching on consoles in 2019 as a definitive version with everything included.

Quite what that additional content would look like remains unclear and depends on how many PC sales are made.

“…we’d like at least one more boss, flesh out crafting, add more puzzles, have a perma-death mode as an option, and a bit bigger final conclusion to the game. Honestly, I like to think of it like an epilogue at the end of a book.”

Here’s hoping No Matter Studios finds success with its upcoming Early Access launch of Praey for the Gods, arriving Jan. 31 via Steam.
