Rocket League Dev Discusses Benefits of Cross-Platform Play

After Microsoft unveiled the offer of cross-platform play between platforms, Rocket League was revealed to be the first game that would implement this feature. While Microsoft has already gotten the go-ahead from the PC community for the feature, there still hasn’t been any official confirmation on Sony’s end, with them giving a statement during an interview at GDC that didn’t actually confirm or deny what would happen.

It’s a curious case for Rocket League, as the PS4 version of the game does already support cross-platform play with PC. With Sony’s approval, Rocket League would be connected through every platform, and that holds a lot of exciting possibilities, some of which developer Psyonix’ vice president, Jeremy Dunham, spoke extensively about in a recent interview with Gamespot.

In the interview, Dunham assures everyone that as far as the technical side of cross-platform play goes, they’ve “got it figured out.” Everything works as it should, and all that’s left to figure out is the more political side of the feature. With Sony’s lack of confirmation, this area is still pretty muddy, but once given the OK, things will smooth out.

As far as the benefits go, the biggest and most obvious is the expansion of the user-base for Rocket League. With cross-platform play being available for all platforms, more users will be able to connect and play with both strangers and friends who may not have the same platform. On the technical side of things, this also means that updates can be spread across all platforms.

“Then you have the actual reality of it, which is, more players, for everyone, means more games, and more games means more participation and community feedback, which we can then put into the game as a whole and not have to worry about siloing off certain features of certain platforms because this version doesn’t have it, or whatever the situation may be,” said Dunham.
