Epic Games has clamped down on cheating in Fortnite’s Battle Royale mode, banning “thousands” of players. The developer believed the cheaters were ruining the experience for everyone else by modding the game to allow them to pull off moves they shouldn’t be able to, such as 360-degree turns followed by instant headshots of other players. Stating that “nobody likes playing with cheaters,” Epic Community Coordinator Nathan Mooney assured Fortnite players that the studio is taking action to cut down on cheating. Mooney called this initiative “the highest priority” across the entire Epic Games organization. “We are constantly working against both the cheaters themselves and the cheat providers,” he wrote on Epic’s website. “And it’s ongoing, we’re exploring every measure to ensure these cheaters are removed and stay removed from Fortnite Battle Royale and the Epic ecosystem. We don’t want to give too many clues about what we’re doing, but we are rolling out tools and will continue to do so. Thousands have been banned and we have no plans to stop!” Speaking of plans, Epic is apparently preparing to introduce an account progression system to Fortnite that it believes will further help to prevent cheating. Mooney explained that the system will reward players with “stuff” as they play, theoretically demotivating cheating by incentivizing honest play. “It will also help in the war against casual Cheaters and will give them less incentive to simply cheat their progression with a ban around the corner!” Mooney promised that Epic will continue refining solutions for repeat cheaters and encouraged Fortnite players to report any bad behavior they encounter, preferably with screenshots and/or video.
