Epic Games Fortnite Battle Royale team recently posted a second developer update video detailing some significant changes to gameplay coming soon. As well as answering community questions about voice chat, weapons, consumables and scope adjustments, they also teased some interesting potential future additions.
Eric Williamson and Zack Estep discussed the arrival of hotly requested gameplay features such as voice chat for console gamers – already out on PC via patch 1.72 – which they stated will arrive soon. With respect to weapons, Williamson stated there is “a big opportunity to add a lot of weapons to Battle Royale… and a huge opportunity to introduce more consumables”. The team is currently working on balancing these additional weapons and also consumables such as a potion that would restore full HP and partial armor.
Weapon accuracy is also said to be a major area the developers are looking at rebalancing. Assault rifles will be altered to make them more effective while shooting on the move. There’s also some experimentation with increasing weapon recoil. Notably, one longterm change may see a complete revamp of the shooting mechanic across all weapons, switching from hit-scan to projectile-based shooting (like the sniper rifle).
Speaking about the next phase of updates for the game, the producers reiterated that greater customization and quality of life improvements are on the way. This includes account progression and character customization. Aim assist will be tweaked, which is an area that the developers admit needs attention. The SMG, too, will be given some attention to rebalance the weapon and make it a more viable loadout.
Some other cool teases include changes to jump pads (tires), the addition of a visible arc when throwing grenades, and auto-pickup of consumable items and resources (anything that doesn’t take up an inventory slot).
