One Piece has quite the collection of video games to accompany the incredibly successful and seemingly never-ending anime series that debuted almost 20 years ago. Now, One Piece fans have two more games to look forward to and just one more reason to consider investing in PlayStation VR.
Japan’s Weekly Jump magazine revealed that two new One Piece games are currently in development. While there wasn’t much additional information provided, each of the upcoming One Piece titles have rather interesting spins on them when compared to previous titles—or at least, developers hope they both do anyway. The first game’s hook is obvious. One Piece: Grand Cruise will be the first VR One Piece game as it prepares to make its way to PlayStation VR. What exactly a VR One Piece game entails, however, isn’t clear. The magazine published screenshots that suggest ship exploration will be a key part of the game. There has been some speculation that the game will essentially be a way for players to interact with crew members on the ship and focus simply on exploration. We’re certainly hoping that looking around a ship is only a small part of what the game will offer. While the gimmick-heavy feeling that accompanies many VR games is nothing new, an entire game dedicated to looking around a ship from a popular anime just seems far too underwhelming. Especially when you consider the fact that One Piece actually has some great games in its collection.
As for the second title that is in the works, it is shrouded in even more mystery than the VR title and it comes with even bigger, loftier promises. The second game, which has been given the codename Dawn, will allegedly be an “unprecedented” experience for fans of the One Piece series. The game is being worked on by Bandai Namco, Shueisha, and Toei Animation who are all working in collaboration to ensure the setting and music from the anime are brought to life in this game. Mention of the game being an extremely large project has us wondering if Dawn may turn out to be a massive open world One Piece game. It’s not a far-fetched idea considering just last year One Piece game series producer Koji Nakajima mentioned open world games during an interview with Siliconera. When asked where he sees the game series going next, Nakajima answered, “There’s no specific plan for the next title but what I personally think is that with the PS4 and Xbox One we have powerful hardware and also I personally like open world games.”
Perhaps this “unprecedented” new game will finally drop us in the middle of a detailed, complex open world adventure with Luffy and the gang? Who knows. For now, fans will have to wait a few more days until more details are revealed during the Tokyo One Piece Tower event on July 22. The event will allow visitors to play a demo version of the upcoming VR title but there have been no promises of a first look at the second “unprecedented” game.
