The Last Guardian Creator Hints His Next Project May Be Open World

We look forward to it.

Famed game creator Fumito Ueda is most well known for creating such classics as Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian. Ueda recently took part in a fireside chat with Ubisoft Massive’s Managing Director David Polfelt at the Nordic Game Conference and gave a few hints as to what we can expect from his next project.

Ueda stated that following the more linear experience of The Last Guardian, he feels he would like to go back to an open world like Shadow of the Colossus.

“I created the more open world of Shadow because Ico was an adventure game set in such a small space – and I spent four years in that closed space. So I wanted to go out into something more open,” he said.

“I cannot talk about the details [of my next project] but… Shadow came out of the experience with Ico, [going] from a closed world to open world. When I completed Shadow, there was a moment where I wondered if I wanted to go around an open world again, and maybe I should go back to a more closed space, spending a more intimate time with something in that space. That became the starting point for The Last Guardian.

“Now I’ve completed The Last Guardian and spent so many years in that game, maybe I may go back to the Shadow-type environment.”

Ueda has also stated in the past that he’d be interested in developing a first-person shooter. Whether the two ideas will be used is anyone’s guess, but we look forward to seeing what the skilled developer does next.
