Eurogamer reports that the next Deus Ex game isn’t coming anytime in the foreseeable future. A combination of disappointing Mankind Divided sales and Square Enix’s new Marvel partnership that will birth a series of games starting with one based on The Avengers.

Industry sales tracking firm NPD Group reported that Mankind Divided was the third-best-selling game during its debut month of August 2016, but that apparently didn’t result in enough revenue for Square Enix given the game’s costly five-year development cycle.

Square Enix and Eidos Montreal first revived the Deus Ex franchise with 2010’s Human Revolution and three years later announced “Deus Ex Universe,” which planned to span “a generation of core games.” It would be three more years until Mankind Divided finally released, and despite its five-year development cycle, the game’s developers still ran out of time to wrap up all the story points they intended to within Mankind Divided because of scope creep. The plan then became to resolve those bits in the third and final game of the current trilogy.

That, however, now appears unlikely. It’s not known when — if ever — Square Enix will give Eidos Montreal the green light to return to Deus Ex and wrap up its planned trilogy. Most of Eidos is said to be working on Shadows of the Tomb Raider with the remainder assisting Crystal Dynamics on the aforementioned Avengers game, and neither appear particularly close to releasing.
