With the failings of the Wii U and the rise of the 3DS in recent years, some fans have begun to question whether Nintendo should continue to create home consoles or if they should solely devote themselves to creating powerful handhelds. Although the reveal of the Switch has served to put many minds at ease, there are still many who felt underwhelmed by the new console and continue to question Nintendo’s direction. Youtuber Matthew Patrick, or MatPat, recently invited the president of Nintendo of America, Reggie Fils-Aimé, to his channel in order to debate this very subject matter.
Both sides manage to argue their points very well and while ultimately nothing new is revealed about the Switch, it is very interesting to watch Fils-Aimé defend Nintendo’s history of choosing to focus on innovation over powerful hardware. In the past, Nintendo as a whole hasn’t done very much to translate their vision to the fans, but with appearances like these, it seems they’re definitely attempting to change that. MatPat’s argument over the Nintendo’s former lack of third-party support is a concern shared by many fans, however Fils-Aimé does a good job asserting that third-party developers have hopped on board the Switch and that the console will be seeing a multitude of games outside the standard first-party titles.
At the end of the day, the innovation vs market standard debate will rage on, however the video does provide a strong insight into what Nintendo’s ideology is when creating new gaming experiences. For those looking to understand why the company does what they do when releasing a console, this is a very strong place to start as Fils-Aimé comes off very clear while MatPat dishes out some pretty important criticisms.
