The Sega Genesis love letter and 2D platformer known as Freedom Planet has once again been teased for release on the Nintendo Switch, but this time a bit more seriously.
The game’s developer Galaxy Trail have teased the possibility before now, but it appears that now they might mean it. AÂ few months back, the team joked about the prospect of Freedom Planet being on the Switch with a picture shared on their social media pages, which literally showed a PC copy of the game sitting on top of a Nintendo Switch. They capped it off with the caption, “Are we doing it right?”
Well, after that gentle ribbing, it seems that Galaxy Trail may have listened to the feedback from the fans, and have made a follow-up to that original image, which they have shared via Twitter. The image seems very similar to the original joke post about porting the game, but a quick glance at the image reveals what appears to be a working version of the game’s title screen running on the Switch, along with an update indicator in the bottom right corner reading “v.1.21.5.”
Guys, we know it’s been a while but I have to ask… are we doing it right yet? pic.twitter.com/YxbEfEVPNf

There is no concrete evidence as to whether or not Freedom Planet is planned to be released on Switch, but the tease seems a bit too specific to mean nothing at all. With the game’s sequel Freedom Planet 2 coming sometime in the near future, and the popularity that the game enjoyed during its brief time on the Wii U before other systems, porting the game to the Switch doesn’t seem all that far-fetched.
The original Freedom Planet was a fast-paced 2D platformer originally released for PC, which started life as a Sonic the Hedgehog fan-game, until the developers became dissatisfied with making something derivative and instead decided to re-imagine the project as their own intellectual property. The game is most reminiscent of the original Sonic games on the Sega Genesis, but also takes clear inspiration from other classics on the system, such as Rocket Knight Adventures and Gunstar Heroes.
The sequel – which is currently planned for release some time in 2019 – plans to move just a bit further away from the Sonic influence that initially inspired the project, and get a bit more creative and original with its mechanics than the first. The development of the game will also be assisted by none other than Christian Whitehead, who helped lead the development of Sonic Mania not too long ago, just in case you were worried that the game would lose its speed.
Freedom Planet is available now for PC, Wii U, and PS4, and Freedom Planet 2 is planned for release on multiple platforms some time next year.
