Earlier today on the Marvel Entertainment YouTube channel, the official teaser trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was released. The trailer features many returning characters from the first Doctor Strange film, Wanda Maximoff, and a sort of brand-new character.
Right off the bat, it’s important to note that this is the exact same trailer that was shown after the credits of Spider-Man No Way Home. That means if you stayed around in the theater until after the credits ended, then you got a week early preview. And if you haven’t seen No Way Home yet, then you’ll only have to stick around for the mid-credits scene.
The trailer begins with a few close-ups of some candles being put out by the wind and a broken watch with voice-overs of lines from No Way Home. First, Wong warns Strange about casting the spell to make everyone forget Peter Parker is Spider-Man, then you hear Strange saying the line, “The multiverse is a concept about which we know frighteningly little,” followed by the line from an unknown character, “Your desecration of reality will not go unpunished.”
We then see Strange walking out onto the street in New York to witness reality falling apart in a similar manner to the way it did in an episode of What If…? titled What If… Doctor Strange Lost his Heart Instead of His Hands? In this episode, Strange loses Charlotte in a car crash and ends up breaking reality in an attempt to save her.
We also see Rachel McAdams return as Charlotte Olley in the trailer. It appears that Strange is begrudgingly attending her wedding. But that’s about all we see of the scene.
Then the Marvel Studios logo appears and the trailer cuts to Wanda Maximoff pruning trees in an orchard. We see Strange approach her and of course, she assumes he’s there to talk to her about what happened in Westview (the main location of the show Wandavision). But much to her surprise, Strange reveals that he made the trip to ask her about the multiverse.
The trailer also showed that Karl Mordo and Wong will return and the former appears to even have a fight with Strange. Wanda is seen in her Scarlet Witch attire for a brief moment as well. But a less expected appearance in the trailer is the giant tentacled demon known as Shuma-Gorath.
But the biggest reveal of all came at the end of the trailer when what may end up being Strange Supreme appeared. The shot of him delivering the line, “Things just got out of hand,” was introduced with a broken up line of, “I hope you understand, the greatest threat to our universe is you.”
As of right now, there’s no indication that this mysterious variant of Doctor Strange will be the same or even similar to the one seen in What If…?, but it’s at least interesting to see ideas from the animated show making their way into the MCU films.
You can check out the full trailer down below, right here, or in theaters after the credits of No Way Home. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is currently set to release exclusively in theaters on May 6, 2022.
