The free text and audio chat software app Discord is celebrating its third anniversary this week with a big update that aims for better optimization.
The update mainly focused on the service’s infrastructure to handle larger servers better. CPU and network usage will be “about the same” if a server has a hundred or a hundred-thousand people, and the Discord app on mobile devices now uses less data and battery power. The app currently loads faster on iOS devices, with support for Android devices “imminent.”
The patch also notes that “large Discord servers can now grow larger” with a nod to Epic Games’ Fortnite, which has the largest verified server at 180,000 users. Other changes include allowing Xbox Insiders to connect their accounts to Discord, audio is enabled in screensharing, audio files can now be played within the app, and a darker dark mode. The company also published some stats about the chat platform, such as reaching 130 million registered users with 19 million daily users. The service has considerably grown compared to 2017, which had 45 million registered users with 8.9 million daily. Check out the list of stats in the infographic below.
