Dark Souls Continues to Be Infinitely Replayable With New Daughters of Ash Mod, Includes New NPCs, Stories, and Mechanics

This article is over 5 years old and may contain outdated information

Dark Souls will turn eight years old this year. And yet, even now as we’re speaking, that original release still sees a rather healthy player base (though the Remastered version has fractured it a little), and you’ll still see popular Souls streamers continue to do challenge runs for the game.

The Dark Souls modding community is also known for being incredibly active as well, and modder Grimrukh has just released a new mod for the game, titled Daughters of Ash. Over on the mod’s website, Grimrukh boasts that it features more content than the original game, and it drastically alters base game progressions and mechanics Souls veterans might already be used to.

Here’s a brief rundown of some of the new features you can expect:

  • New game progression
    • Forget what you know about exploring Lordran. New world-changing events, key items, and unexpected pathways await you.
  • New bosses and enemies
    • Triumph in new boss battles, most of which are designed to promote novel gameplay rather than sheer increased difficulty. Encounter new enemies on your journey – including enemies restored from cut content – and watch many old bosses and enemies behave in new ways.
  • New NPCs and storylines
    • Meet new characters with brand new questlines, which will intersect in numerous unpredictable ways as your journey continues. Even the stories of familiar characters may take unexpected turns.
  • New weapons, items, and mechanics
    • Discover new weapons with brand new abilities, many of which will require keen insights and careful consideration to master. Most existing equipment will not be exactly the way you remember.
  • Expanded lore
    • Learn more about Lordran’s past from new item descriptions and gameplay events. (All new content is written to build upon the lore of the original game, rather than conflict with it.)
  • New secrets
    • Don’t expect to come anywhere close to unveiling all of the game’s hidden content in one or two play-throughs.

Now, of course, because this is a fan-created mod, Grimrukh warns users that there are still bugs and glitches to iron out. Furthermore, it’s PC-only, for obvious reasons. But if you own a copy of the game on Steam, and have been itching to revisit the original Dark Souls, Daughters of Ash seems to be a great reason to jump back in.
