J.R.R Tolkien was a master world builder. His fantasy novels feature some of the most compelling lore ever conceived and actually serve as a basis for dozens of fantasy franchises ever since their release back in the 1930s. That doesn’t mean everything you’ll see or read in The Lord of the Rings is entirely made up; Tolkein appears to have based much of his lore on medieval and pagan cultures from throughout real history.

In the case of the face on the Elven armor we see in The Rings of Power, the design looks very much like the Green Man, a pagan design that is frequently seen across Britain today. The face represents the tiding of spring and is a popular ornament in British gardens even to this day. There are even festivals that celebrate the Green Man and the arrival of spring.

Above you can see a comparison. There are actually many different interpretations of the Green Man, some of which look even more similar to the one seen in Rings of Power.

It should be noted that we don’t know for certain that the Green Man is the face seen on the armor, but it certainly looks too similar to not at least be inspired by it. There are even green leaves surrounding the face. Of course, the face may not actually represent the Green Man but instead some sort of Ent or an important mythological figure of Middle Earth that is simply based on the Green Man. We’ll keep this article updated if we discover anything further.

That does it for what the face is on the elves’ armor in the Rings of Power. If you’re interested in further useful guides and information on the show then search Twinfinite or check out some the related content listed below.
