Always Check the History Book and Notebook
The story of Valkyria Revolution is structured much like Valkyria Chronicles and presented through a History Book in-game, as two characters in the future try to piece events together. Of course there’s a lengthy main story, but the game also rewards you with a number of optional cutscenes and events to view. Extra fragments in the History Book give you more context on the overall story and world, while the Notebook gives you fun scenes featuring specific party members. Even better, these Notebook scenes can unlock new potentials for your characters.
If you want to properly understand the story of Valkyria Revolution and get more context on events, it’s important that you watch these scenes, not to mention the bonuses your party can get from them.
Try Out Different Party Combinations
Right off the bat you’ll have all party member at your disposal in Valkyria Revolution, and they each have a specific job and strength. For example, Blum the sapper is best as a heavy magic user and healer, while the main character Amleth functions best as a tank that rushes right into groups of enemies. Because of how much variation there is between characters and how you can customize them, it’s important that you test out different party compositions and see what works best. More importantly, you want to see what kind of style you prefer.
Maybe you like bringing nothing but scouts into battle for a quick and nimble approach, or maybe you’d rather hit the enemy with some devastating magical attacks from sappers and shock troopers. The only way to find out which characters you like best, and which ones work best together, is by experimenting in battle. Don’t be afraid to bring any given character into battle, and equip them with Ragnite skills you’ve yet to test out.
Visit Basel’s Factory on a Regular Basis
The most important aspect of character customization in Valkyria Revolution comes with Basil’s Factory is Elsinore. This location lets you upgrade your party member’s stats and elemental affinities, in turn letting them equip stronger Ragnite. On top of that, you can also select new R&D projects that give you new guns and grenades to use in battle.
You’ll need kr (money) to use R&D projects, while you’ll actually have to use Ragnite gems themselves to upgrade your characters. Luckily both of these can be earned from any battle within the game. It’s honestly best to visit Basil’s Factory after each battle in Valkyria Revolution to see which new weapons you can get or place a character upgrade or two.
Keep Your Items Stocked
Buying items can be an easy thing to forget in Valkyria Revolution, especially with so much else to spend your money on. However, it’s critically important that you keep your stock up, especially later in the game as an item can save you from defeat in a pinch. The Vanargand Headquarters in Elsinore has a quartermaster that’ll sell you basic use items, like things that restore your health or RP. As the game progresses you’ll unlock new and more powerful items to buy, and controlling more territory on the world map will even reduce the prices.
When buying items you can see how many of each type you’ll be able to bring into battle, although you won’t be able to bring your whole stock. Just make sure you at least have the minimum so you can use the items in a pinch for whatever you might need.
Take Advantage of Free Missions
Story missions, of course, make up the bulk of Valkyria Revolution. However, the game will constantly have Free Missions available for you to undertake. These are basic battles with simple objective like defeat the enemy commander or capture a base, but the rewards are well worth it.
Not only will Free Missions help you control more territory on the world map, but you’ll also be rewarded with kr and Ragnite gems quite often. Grinding a couple Free Battles between story sections is a good way to build up your resources and improve your party before heading on to a tough mission or boss.
