How Long is Shining Resonance Refrain?

Shining Resonance Refrain is technically a remake of a PS3 game that released in Japan in 2014, but it’s the first title in the Shining series the west has received in over a decade. The game is an action-RPG in the same vein as the Tales series, and it’s definitely more bright and cheerful in aesthetic than past games that western fans might be used to. Of course with a new JRPG on the horizon, many fans will be wondering just how long they can expect to have with the game.

Shining Resonance Refrain is split up into eight different chapters, although they’re of varying length. If you’re looking to just play through the main story you can expect the game to take you roughly 30-35 hours. However, there’s a fair amount of optional content to wade through as well. There’s a ton of little sidequests to undertake in the city of Marga, and there are fun optional scenes you can view at different times of your adventure, fleshing out the characters a little more. There’s also the optional Grimoire dungeons you can undertake to level up your party and gain powerful Aspects. Depending on how much of all this you can do, it can easily add hours onto your playtime. Our playthrough clocked in right around 40 hours, doing a fair amount of side content and seeing just about every optional conversation we could.

Also keep in mind that Shining Resonance Refrain has two different modes, Original and Refrain. It’s recommended that you save Refrain mode for a second playthrough to avoid spoilers, but the biggest change it makes is adding on Jinas and Excella as playable characters, with their own conversation scenes as well. This’ll add even more playtime on, if you choose to go through Refrain mode.
