How to Get Rayquaza in Pokemon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon

If you’re a fan of legendary Pokemon, then you’ll know that Rayquaza is serious business. In its base form, it rubs shoulders with some of the most fearsome beasts in the series’ history, and its ill-advised Mega Evolution basically broke the metagame when it hit the scene in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. Should you be seeking it out in Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, you’ll be happy to know that it’s only a quick Ultra Warp Ride away.

The Ultra Warp Ride is a minigame exclusive to Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon that allows the player to ride Solgaleo or Lunala into wormholes in order to find legendary Pokemon from previous generations. Depending on which wormhole you end up in, the Pokemon you’ll encounter will be completely different.

The first thing you will have to know before you tackle this mission is that both Groudon and Kyogre must be in your team in order for Rayquaza to appear, because the lore is real, dammit. The complication here is that Groudon can only be found in yellow wormholes in Pokemon Ultra Sun, while Kyogre appears in the blue wormholes of Pokemon Ultra Moon. You’ll have to do a bit of trading if you want to initiate this process.

Once you have the necessary Pokemon in tow, head into the Ultra Wormhole. From here, you will be trying to navigate into a red wormhole to find Rayquaza, but rushing into the first red wormhole you see is a foolhardy process. You’ll want to collect the energy balls in order to increase your Pokemon’s speed and travel further.

As you progress, you will find more elaborate wormholes to enter, with a maximum level of four (look for the rainbow ring around the wormhole to find the highest level). Once you spot a level four red wormhole, enter it. If you’re lucky, you’ll come face to face with Rayquaza (or at very least one of the other legendary Pokemon that lurk in a red wormhole). It’s not a certainty, however, even if you have fulfilled all other criteria, so you may have to try multiple times before you bump into the desired Pokemon.

Does this all sound like a lot of effort? Honestly, it kind of is. If you want to fast-track the effort, you can either acquire Rayquaza through Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire (or even previous generations, if you can be bothered with the cumbersome transfer process), or simply find it in the GTS in Ultra Sun or Ultra Moon. You can search for Rayquaza without having ever seen it (just scroll down to the ‘which Pokemon’ section and enter its name), and sometimes, people are willing to give one away for surprisingly cheap.

The other alternative, albeit a long shot, is for you to deposit a Pokemon and request a Rayquaza in return. Obviously, this is a steep price to pay, and most players will hesitate to participate. You’ll either have to front a legendary Pokemon of your own, or deposit a popular ‘mon like Eevee and hope for the best. Funnily enough, farming Eevee can prove lucrative if you’re patient enough; don’t underestimate just how much people adore that bundle of fluff!
