Always Use Your Strike

Tips and Tricks for Beginners of Matterfall

Your Strike (assigned to L1) is arguably the most important move you have at your disposal. Not only does it allow you to dash through the air or along the ground, but it also stuns enemies, preventing them from moving or firing at you.

This allows you to catch your breath and take care of any looming threats before they hit you and lower your multiplier. It’s also worth noting that your Strike also clears incoming projectiles that you can’t shoot down with your weapon. If you ever find your screen filling with projectiles and enemies, use Strike, it’ll make things a heck of a lot easier. If you stun an enemy with Strike before killing them in Matterfall, you’ll also get more score for the kill, making it crucial for anyone wanting to top the leaderboards.

Keep on Movin’

Tips and Tricks for Beginners of Matterfall

Matterfall likes throwing hundreds of enemies in your general direction and watching how you deal with them. While it’s certainly possible to stay still and come out alive, you’ll find it far, far easier to manage busy screens if you keep on the move yourself. We strongly advise using Strike to move around whenever possible first, as this prevents you from taking damage if you do happen to collide with an enemy or projectile. You’ll then have time to thin out the crowd, moving as you fire to make yourself a more difficult target for other incoming enemies.

If you’re in a confined area, try and learn the pattern of the enemy attacks and spawns. Get it right and you can repeat a series of movements that prevent you from getting hit, while also dealing damage to incoming enemies. This is a particularly handy trick to remember for boss battles, especially the final one.

Look Out for Civilians

Tips and Tricks for Beginners of Matterfall

While you don’t need to collect civilians in Matterfall to advance the story or unlock the next level, they will give you either extra health or an Augmentation to help you on your way. For those unaware, Augmentations are either passive abilities or different weapons that give you the upper-hand in battle. These can range from a Grenade launcher to a passive ability that increases the damage output of your primary weapon.

Not only this, but grabbing all of the civilians in Matterfall’s levels will unlock a few trophies/ achievements along the way, and who doesn’t want to add a few more to their collection?

Think When to Use Overcharge

Tips and Tricks for Beginners of Matterfall

When there are 30 different machines flying towards you, trying to snatch your final block of health, there’s nothing that’ll get you out of a pickle faster than using your Overcharge ability. This increases your weapon output, makes you invincible, and slows down time for a short amount of time. It’s the perfect way to turn the tide in your favor, and the best shot you have at grabbing a health boost before you move on.

Just because the meter is fully-charged, doesn’t mean you should use it, though. If you’re about to be sent way back to your last checkpoint, go ahead, but if you think you can survive without, do so. You never know what Matterfall might throw your way afterwards, and it could be something that makes you wish you’d never activated this powerful mode.

Take Your Time

Tips and Tricks for Beginners of Matterfall

While keeping on the move is always important when taking on the machines of Matterfall, other times a bit of patience will go a long way. This is particularly true for the game’s platforming sections, requiring you to use your ‘smart matter’ gun to create platforms, navigate laser beams, and more. At these points, working out the safest route, or clearing out enemies is definitely worthwhile.

Without the added panic of the unknown or a darn turret sending a torrent of flaming, orange balls your way, navigating the futuristic levels becomes far easier and makes platforming sections less of a headache. You can simply focus on making it to the other side, rather than navigating incoming fire, too.
