Developed by FourQuarters and published by Devolver Digital, Loop Hero is a brand new card-based, deck-building RPG that’s just been released on Steam. The controls are simple, but mastering this game and making smart tactical decisions will require quite a bit of practice. Here are some Loop Hero tips and tricks to get you started.
Set Yourself Up Well Early On
In Loop Hero, enemies get progressively tougher as the number of loops increases.
This means that it’s important to fight as many enemies as you possibly can in the early loops as they’re still extremely low-leveled and easy to kill, and will drop you plenty of cards to use in the coming rounds.
To that end, make sure to drop enemy spawn cards on the map, but don’t go overboard with it.
You can probably get away with about three spawns in your first loop, or maybe even more if you get lucky with equipment drops or you’ve already got decent camp upgrades.
In addition to that, you’ll get better equipment drops based on your item level, which means that you should definitely focus on equipping higher tier items as you get them for the early loops. You can worry about stats later.
Hold Out for Card Synergies
Loop Hero Tips & Tricks
Card synergy is the name of the game in Loop Hero. Figuring out which cards work well with each other that can be used to your benefit is extremely important, and will help to make your runs easier.
This takes a lot of experimentation, but after a few runs, you’ll eventually get the hang of it and get a feel for which cards to place down quickly, and which ones to hold on to for a while.
For instance, if you get a lot of early Meadow cards, you can probably hold on to those for a while since the HP restoration isn’t too important early on. By holding out for Treasury cards, you can place the Meadow cards down next to a Treasury to get even more resources to be more efficient.
Or, if you’ve already unlocked the Village card, placing it near a Vampire’s Mansion will let you spawn Ghoul enemies for tougher fights, but a better shot at getting resources like the Orb of Expansion.
On the other hand, cards that can be placed down quickly include Rocks and Mountains, which increase your max HP and allow you to build up that HP pool very quickly.
Learn How to Get Each Resource
In between your runs in Loop Hero, you can retreat to your campsite and build and upgrade structures to give yourself more of an advantage in combat.
The first few structures you’ll build include the Herbalist and Gymnasium, which will allow you to carry potions and also learn new traits when killing enemies.
However, actually building and upgrading structures takes time and resources, and Loop Hero doesn’t explicitly tell you how to get them.
For instance, Food Supplies are needed for some early upgrades, but it’s never clear how to get them. You get one unit of Food Supply by collecting 12 Rations, which are obtained from Meadows.
Stable Wood is obtained by getting 12 Stable Branches, which you get from passing through Groves, and so on and so forth. Others are a little trickier, such as the Orb of Expansion, which requires you to beat at least five enemies on a single tile.
Keeping an eye on which resources you need and planning your loops around that will allow you to expand your camp quickly, making the game a bit easier.
Don’t Get Greedy
Loop Hero Tips & Tricks
On that note, it’s important not to get too greedy in Loop Hero. If you die in the middle of a loop, you only get to keep 30% of the resources you’ve collected, which isn’t the end of the world, but it does severely impede your upgrading progress.
It’s definitely advisable to avoid the boss for your first handful of runs while you focus on collecting resources and upgrading your camp. Once you’ve gotten a few upgrades under your belt, you can then start to go for more loops and eventually summon the boss.
Keep an Eye on the Boss Spawn Meter
Loop Hero Tips & Tricks
While looping, make sure to keep an eye on the boss meter right below the day meter in the top left corner of the screen. The boss meter fills up as you defeat enemies and place down cards, and once it’s filled up, the boss will spawn and you’ll have to beat it in order to progress, or die.
You don’t want to spawn the boss too early, but you don’t want to spawn it too late either as it’ll get more powerful. Between your seventh to 10th loops should be a good time to spawn it whenever you’reready.
If you’re looking for some specific tips against the first boss of the game, the Lich, you can consider building structures around your camp to prevent the Lich from building castles there. This will weaken it quite a bit, and you can also try to increase your evasion stat during the fight to dodge its slow magical attacks.
