Fallout 4: Contraptions – How to Control the Weather

And they said Atom was the God of the Wasteland, pfft.
This article is over 8 years old and may contain outdated information

Fallout 4 has introduced a lot of interesting new mechanics through its DLCs and expansions. You can now build robots, capture enemies and make them fight, and even change the weather. Oh, you didn’t know you could change the weather? That’s because it was just introduced in the latest Contraptions DLC. Of course, you’re not going to get some magic want to wave at the sky, so you’re going to have to do a bit of crafting.

The first thing you’ll need is a Fireworks Mortar (it’s the thing that fires your weather changing goodies). Head into your Workshop Menu at one of the settlements and go to Power, then Miscellaneous. There are two different ones you can craft, but both required the same amount of resources to make:

Firework Mortar/Firework Mortar (Angled)

  • 2 Wood
  • 2 Steel
  • 1 Asbestos

It needs to be powered, but only requires one electricity, so if you have an existing generator you should be fine. Once that’s set up, it’s time to start crafting some Fireworks Shells. These can be created through a Pyrotechnics Mill, or at any Chemistry Station (chances are you already have a chemistry station, so no point in building a mill, unless you want to mass produce weather). There are three that affect the weather:

Clear Weather

  • 1 Adhesive
  • 1 Cloth
  • 1 Fertilizer
  • 1 Gold

Radstorm

  • 1 Adhesive
  • 1 Cloth
  • 1 Fertilizer
  • 1 Nuclear Material

Rain

  • 1 Adhesive
  • 1 Cloth
  • 1 Fertilizer
  • 1 Silver

Now head back to your Mortar and load it up with your fresh shells. If you’re looking for them in your inventory, they’ll be under Misc. as Weather Changing Shells – (insert name of shell you’re looking for). Load them up and watch the sky change.

If you want to control the intervals of launches, because they’ll launch pretty quickly on their own, use a terminal that’s on the same circuit as your Fireworks Mortar. This will let you set timing and the order of launches.

Now you can change the weather at the flip of a switch. No more having to ride out Rad Storms, just bring some nice cool rain or a sunny sky to the Wasteland.
