Developed by Claytechworks and published by Square Enix, Bravely Default 2 is a brand new JRPG being released exclusively for the Nintendo Switch this week. It features a rather extensive job system that can be pretty overwhelming if you’re new to the series, so we’re here to help. Here’s everything you need to know about the job system in Bravely Default 2.
Bravely Default 2 Job System Explained
There are a ton of jobs in Bravely Default 2, and each of them comes with 12 active and passive abilities. The first thing you need to know is that the jobs will affect your character stats, and creating a party that’s well-rounded and strong requires you to take each job’s strengths and weaknesses into consideration, especially when you’re going up against bosses.
How to Get New Jobs
First off, there is only one main method of getting jobs in Bravely Default 2, and that’s by defeating bosses.
Simply by playing through the main story, you’ll encounter tons of tough bosses who are essentially mascots for whatever job the game’s going to give you next.
Early on in the prologue, for instance, the first couple of bosses give you the White Mage and Vanguard Asterisk, allowing you to start getting some diversity in your party composition.
Aside from that, there are also a small handful of side quests that can offer you jobs as well. The dream side quest in Enderno (unlocked in chapter 3) will reward you with the Salve-maker job if you see it through to the end, and there are a few others to discover by traveling off the beaten path.
Main Jobs and Sub-Jobs
When you reach chapter 2, you’ll start getting more jobs than you know what to do with, and this is where things start to get a bit more complicated. Each character can have a main job and a sub-job, essentially creating a dual-classing system where one character can access two sets of abilities.
To do this, simply bring up the menu and choose Jobs, then highlight the job you want to equip for a character and set it as a main job or sub-job.
There are a couple of important things to note while doing this: first, your character will take on the appearance of whatever you set as their main job, and second, your character’s stat changes are only affected by the main job and not the sub-job.
This means that you do need to take stats into consideration while building your party. For example, having something like Swordmaster as your main and White Mage as your sub might not be the best idea, as your Restorative Power stat won’t be high enough for your healing to really make a difference. On the flip side, pairing the magic jobs together can create a spellcasting powerhouse.
There is a middle ground as well, and in our playthrough, we found that putting Beastmaster and White Mage on Elvis actually worked pretty decently and he was capable of dealing tons of damage while also serving as a decent backup healer for Gloria.
JP and Leveling
Leveling your characters in Bravely Default 2 is important, but so is leveling your jobs. While your characters gain levels with experience, your jobs level up with Job Points, or JP for short.
Winning battles will reward you with both experience and JP, and that’s how you slowly level up. Each job caps out at level 12, and with every level you gain, you’ll learn a new active or passive ability exclusive to that job.
The best way to farm JP is by battling or using JP Orbs, which can be obtained easily by sending the boat out on expeditions regularly.
Abilities
Finally, these are why you want to level as many jobs on as many characters as possible. Active abilities can only be used when a job is set as your main or sub, but passive abilities can be equipped to a character even without that job.
To do this, bring up your menu and choose Abilities, then select a character to see which passive abilities they’ve unlocked for each job. Each character can have up to five passives, so mixing and matching them across jobs will allow your party to become more versatile in battle.
That’s all you need to know about how the job system works in Bravely Default 2. Be sure to search for Twinfinite for more tips and information on the game.
