Upcoming 2019 Battle Royale Games
Spellbreak
While Realm Royale dabbles in fantasy elements, Spellbreak, an upcoming battle royale game from developer Proletariat, is planning on going all-in.
Instead of looking for guns, ammo, and armor, players will be able to search for what they need to craft builds that will support the various spell combinations that will be present in the game.
From what we can gather, it doesn’t appear like the mages in Spellbreak will be the typical frail and cowardly types.
Instead, it seems more like the Lichdom: Battlemage approach where the mages are all badasses, and you’ll be dueling competitors to see who is the superior magic wielder.
Details are pretty scarce and right now as the game is only available to people who opt into the paid pre-Alpha for at least $40Â *Correction: anyone can sign up for the pre-alpha for free, but there are paid Founder Pack options available as well. Apologies!* and is under a strict NDA.
Keep an eye on Spellbreak as it develops if it sounds intriguing to you, because as of right now it’s still a mystery to most people.

Battlefield V: Firestorm
Battlefield V would have seriously benefited from a delay that would have allowed Firestorm to release alongside the main game, but that’s in the past now.
All eyes will be on Firestorm when it releases sometime this spring, and it will have a small window of opportunity to sway battle royale fans from the likes of Fortnite, PUBG, and Blackout.
Of all our attempts to try and pull information about Firestorm from Dice has been for naught. So despite it being a part of one of the biggest FPS franchises in gaming, details are still pretty scarce.
However, given the series’ history for high quality games with lots of heavy action, we feel pretty confident that Firestorm should be a blast right out of the gates assuming DICE doesn’t rush it out like the main game was.

PlanetSide Arena
While it’s easy to lambast games that appear to just be trying to cash in on the battle royale fad, there are some cases where it makes sense.
The PlanetSide series has always been about massive battles across huge maps, so it’s really not that much of a stretch to mix a battle royale mode into its well-known faction vs. faction wars.
PlanetSide Arena touts 250 vs. 250 group battles and more traditional battle royale gameplay for solo and squad players.
Again, if any game can confidently say that they will have no issues with tremendously large battles, it’s PlanetSide which has been doing it since 2003.
What will be interesting to get to see firsthand shortly when it releases on Jan. 29 is how much (or little) PlanetSide Arena will feel like other battle royale games on the market or if it will be something that’s geared more towards vets of the series.
Upcoming 2019 Battle Royale Games
Ashes of Creation:Â Apocalypse
Ashes of Creation on paper appears to be one of the most ambitious MMORPGs we’ve seen in some time. Our short time with it back at PAX East last year was promising.
However, what we could not anticipate back then is that the game would eventually receive its very own battle royale mode called Apocalypse.
It’s a move that definitely comes off as odd, especially considering its fan base is looking forward to a game in a very different genre.
It didn’t help that its beta experience was rocky to say the least, and that stigma of it being written off as a cash-in is definitely going to exist until it can prove itself.
All of that said however, the fantasy setting in the battle royale genre is underutilized, and if developers Intrepid Games could somehow mesh the two very different experiences into something appealing, that would give it a niche that could help it stand out among the crowd.
Hopefully Intrepid Games embraces that potential angle as it continues to tweak Apocalypse alongside the main MMORPG mode.

Ring of Elysium
Finally we arrive at Ring of Elysium, the only game on this list that is going right at PUBG and Fortnite. It’s not experimenting in a radically different genre, or hedging its bet by relying on other game modes. However, that doesn’t mean it’s a carbon copy either.
Ring of Elysium’s premise is that you’re stuck on a frigid mountain rife with snowstorms and natural disasters that will become deadlier as the game progresses.
The goal is to make it to the rescue helicopter at the end of the game, and obviously, you want to be the one that gets on that helicopter.
What gives Ring of Elysium a better chance of survival than other upstart battle royale games is the support and backing of Tencent, one of the biggest and riches names in gaming. So you can feel pretty confident about giving it a go and not having your time wasted.
Ring of Elysium is currently open for any players that want try it via Steam during its beta phase.
