Sonic and Tails
Over the past 24 years the Blue Blur has made friends with plenty of fellow animals that don’t actually look like the animal they claim to be (seriously – this is what a hedgehog is supposed to look like). No matter how many odd creatures he comes to know, however, Sonic’s number one pal and favorite meat shield will always be his double-tailed fox friend, Miles “Tails” Prower. Fun fact: Miles Prower is a play on words. Say it with me: Miles Prower. Miles per hour. You’re welcome.
Banjo and Kazooie
You cannot have one without the other. With Kazooie comes Banjo, and with Banjo comes Kazooie. This bear and bird are a package deal; a pair not quite attached at the hip – more like attached at the shoulder. They help each other out of the tightest of spots, and have even inspired kinship in another unlikely duo, the chameleon and bat combo known as Yooka-Laylee.
Ash and Pikachu
You’ll never find a friendship more electric than this (yeah, I went there). Things started out shaky for the human and Pokémon companions, but sparks soon began to fly (it’s not over yet!) as they overcame their differences and went on to become masters of the Pokémon League, and masters of being the bestest gosh darn buddies in the world. Shocking, I know.
Max and Chloe
Okay, sure, Max moved away for several years and left Chloe on her own without calling her even once. In the end, that doesn’t make the tiniest difference. These BFFs know they’ll always be friends no matter how much time passes or how much they each change, even with all the weird crap going on in their lives. And hey, if something really drastic happens, Max can always turn back the clock to make things right.
Jak and Daxter
Jak and Daxter were friends well before the latter was cursed with the form of a half-otter, half-weasel (or an “ottsel”), prompting the first game in their trilogy. The duo travel and grow throughout their adventures, complementing each other brilliantly. Jak is the stoic, admirable hero and Daxter is his eccentric, arguably annoying sidekick/best friend. It just doesn’t feel right when they’re apart – not to you, the player, and not to either of them.
Sora, Riku, and Kairi
The Kingdom Hearts series is all about friendship and the power of light, and they don’t come any friendlier than these three. Sure, sometimes there’s a bit of tension going on thanks to the obvious love triangle, but this trio will always be close, no matter whether Sora ends up giving his “Paopu fruit” to Kairi or Riku.
Squall and Zell
You’re thinking, “Zell and Squall were never that close at all!” However, imagine this all too believable scenario: Zell’s bored and wants to kill some time. He texts Squall.
Z: “HEY MAN, LET’S HANG OUT LOL”
S: “…”
Z: “SWEET DUDE. I’LL SWING BY AND WE CAN GO TO THE CAFETERIA AND GRAB SOME HOT DOGS!!”
S: “…whatever.”
Z: “AWESOME! BE RIGHT THERE, MAN!”
S: “…” (secretly happy)
Half an hour later they’re chowing down and Zell takes a Selphie – whoops, a selfie – of the two and posts it to Twitter with the hashtag #BESTDAYEVER. Yeah, these guys are the best of friends.
Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong
Donkey and Diddy have always got each others’ back. They eat bananas together, they ride barrels together, and they smash baddies together. You may not be able to decipher their various ooks and grunts, but their actions say it all. These two primates are prime mates.
Noctis, Prompto, Gladiolus, and Ignis
These guys cruise around town searching for adventure and fun times together. They’re all about the bro fists and frequently congratulate each other for a job well done after battles, and the synergy they exude is easy to see. Noctis may be a prince, but let’s be honest: these four are bros all the way.
Chell and Weighted Companion Cube
Look, not all best friends can get along all of the time. Sometimes one must make sacrifices to show the other how much they care. Chell didn’t do anything wrong. This is the way the Companion Cube wanted it. Everything’s going to be just fine, right? Of course it is. You’re perfectly sane. You’re not a murderer. You’re just a monster. <3
