F. Gary Gray, most recently known for Straight Outta Compton and Fast & Furious 8, will be developing and directing a movie based on Saints Row, according to Deadline.
Greg Russo, who’s currently writing the script for the Warner Bros. Mortal Kombat reboot as well as writing for the upcoming Resident Evil reboot, will be writing the script for the film.
Gray seems to have his eye on video games at the moment, as it was only back in January that his company Fenix Studios optioned the rights to 2017’s cyber stealth game Echo, with the plans to adapt it into a feature film.
Developed by Volition, the Saints Row series is a high-octane, if goofy, take on the world of gang life, carjacking, and(occasionally) superpowers that would be a perfect fit for the director of a Fast & Furious movie.
The project will be a co-production between Fenix Studios, Koch Films, and Occupant Entertainment. An interesting thing to note is that Koch Media is the Germany-based parent of Koch Films. Koch Media also owns Deep Silver, the publisher for the most recent game in the series, Saints Row IV.
From this we can probably guess that the film might have more in common with the latest installation of the franchise in terms of plot and setting.
As an open-world series that spans four games, each with their own distinct flavor of wackiness, Saints Row has the potential for a good, if schlocky, comedy action film. Sure, the track record for video game movies isn’t great, but on paper the project could work.
As of yet it’s early days, so no official release date has been set. We can probably expect to hear more later in the year.
