Knowing your type chart is incredibly important in most Pokemon games, but particularly so in Masters given that a new Type Matchups feature has been introduced. It adds another layer to the depth of the battle system that you’ll definitely need to get your head around to catch em’ all.
Pokemon Masters: Type Matchups Explained: What They Are & What They Do
When you start out the game you get a handful of trainers to join your party with many different of Pokemon. A couple of the first trainers to join you are the Pewter gym leader Brock and the Cerulean gym leader Misty.
Both of these trainers have specific types of Pokemon that they typically favor. Brock is a master of Rock-types and he starts out with an Onix. Misty prefers Water-type Pokemon and she starts out with her Starmie.
In past games, these single-type themed trainers just made it easier to create a plan of attack when battling them. However, now that they’re on your side, you get to use their Pokemon preferences to your advantage.
Each trainer in Pokemon Masters has a specific type of creature that they prefer to use in battle. For example, Misty’s Starmie will get a little boost thanks to her affinity towards Water Pokemon.
This can be helpful in situations where your move won’t land a super-effective hit, but you can still at least boost the power of your Pokemon’s moves to give you more of an edge in battle.
Also, this feature will enable you to take on much more powerful Pokemon if you can combine an enemy’s weakness along with a trainer’s type matchup.
