Wargroove

Developed by Chucklefish, Wargroove is a turn-based tactical strategy game that takes a lot of inspiration from Advance Wars. It also looks insanely good.

Wargroove sports a neat-looking pixel art graphical style, which isn’t uncommon at all among indie games. However, if you look closer, it becomes abundantly clear that Chucklefish put a lot of effort into making their game look as detailed as possible.

All the character sprites have their own unique animations, from the bellowing wings of the Felldragon to the adorable rollover by the pup Caesar.

The maps themselves feature quite a bit of variety as well, offering up a nice color palette that keeps things looking fresh as you progress from one level to the next.

Wargroove might look fairly simple on the surface, but Chucklefish has polished its pixel art style to a shine, easily making this one of the most beautiful games we got to play in February 2019.

Apex Legends

One of the surprise releases of this month, Apex Legends is the hottest battle royale game on the block. Unlike most existing battle royale games out right now, Apex Legends leans heavily into character classes which determine the kind of play style you can adopt in each match.

Despite being free-to-play, Apex Legends looks absolutely breathtaking, which honestly shouldn’t be much of a surprise considering that it was developed by Respawn.

The map itself is gigantic and gorgeous when admired from afar, and the cel-shaded character models look like they were taken straight out of a comic book, which only makes the game look that much more charming.

Far Cry New Dawn

Far Cry New Dawn isn’t a great game, but we’d be remiss not to acknowledge just how pretty Hope County looks, even after it was completely nuked to devastation at the end of Far Cry 5.

17 years after that fateful day, Hope County has blossomed once again, and this time Ubisoft has treated us to an extremely colorful and very neon-looking post-apocalyptic wasteland. It’s definitely a good look for the game, even if we do wish the map size was just a little bigger.

You won’t be admiring detailed character models in this game; instead, you’ll stay for the beautiful vistas and pretty views as the sun dips over the horizon in Hope County. The bloom of Hope County blends well with the neon-popping color palette of Far Cry New Dawn, lending it a certain sense of style we haven’t really seen since Blood Dragon.

Anthem

Storm, beautiful games

Another game that sadly failed to live up to the hype, Anthem is still also a very beautiful game to look at. After the mini-aesthetic disaster that was Mass Effect: Andromeda, it looked like BioWare was determined to right the ship, at least in terms of prettiness.

And it worked. Anthem is probably the most beautiful game of this month, whether you’re hanging around in Fort Tarsis, or flying through the open world of Bastion.

The space foliage of Bastion is incredibly realistic-looking, and even the aliens and enemy models themselves are insanely detailed. If you’re daring enough to get close to them, that is.

All of the Javelins in Anthem look unique as well, and you can even notice the little bits of dirt and grime caked onto the suits when you first get started in the game. Character models and animations also look wonderfully lifelike, and they all have little quirks that distinguish them from one another, thanks in no small part to the Frostbite Engine.
